WAKE UP Destin… the winter nap is almost over and it’s time for Cobia Fishing to begin, our signal for another great season of Charter Fishing.
Each spring, the watch for Cobia migrating along the Gulf Coast kicks off a grand season of recreational fishing with 100’s of thousands of dollars in prizes awaiting the skilled, or lucky, anglers who catch the first cobia, the biggest, the 5 largest, the most by weight, the best of women anglers, the best of children, the best senior… the point being that there are a variety of prizes for the fishermen and the boats who are the best of 2007.
Combining the time of year, the start of the spring fishing season and the shear excitement and skill of Cobia Fishing with the wonderful prize packages has made Cobia Season a greatly anticipated event each year on the Destin Harbor calendar.
What makes Cobia so exciting? Well, it begins with the thrill of the hunt. Captain’s and mates cruise the edge of Destin’s beautiful beaches, using their tuna towers and polarized aided keen vision to search for schools of Cobia. Once they have spotted the target, believe it or not, the fishing gets even more complicated. The captain will adeptly steer their vessel to the cobia(s) and the angler(s) then cast their lines at the target fish.
What bait a Cobia will strike is any ones guess and can change constantly, but eel seem to be one of the best of choices. The cast of the bait is an art within itself. An odd combination of big game fishing, fly-fishing and a touch of horseshoes all add together to create an equation that adds up to the crescendo, a hooked Cobia, and now the fight begins.
One of the hardiest and most aggressive fish in the gulf, the Cobia is an excellent fight for anyone who enjoys the art and the challenge of fishing. The weight of these fish can get up to the mid 100 lbs, but no matter the size, a Cobia is a fish with the vigor to make a fight at any size. If you are interested in trying your hand at Cobia Fishing, call one of the many Captains of the largest charter fleet in Florida or go down to the harbor and talk with the booking booths and the Captains or Mates.
The great thing about the Destin Harbor fishing community is they love to talk about fishing as much as they love to go fishing. Remember that there are many Cobia Tournaments on the Emerald Coast that can add a cash prize and reward to the pleasure of landing one of the ultimate challenges of Sports fishing.
